Like a Virgin Train? Go Here
Virgin Trains get you where you want to be, comfortably and quickly. But the company also understands that the journey is part of the fun. Wherever you’re going, you’ll get there feeling refreshed on arrival. Forget driving in circles and on a side of the road you’re not familiar with, and those low-cost airlines? You’ll enjoy the same hassles on short routes as you would on a long journey. By the time you get the airport, wait for your plane to take off (on-time) and get to the city center, you could have been at your destination. Ah, if only you’d have taken the train!
Come on board. Relax, put your feet up and watch the world go by. Uncover the rich history, scenery and culture of England while traveling up near 125mph in comfort and Virgin’s fleet includes a combination of tilting trains: electric Pendolino and diesel Super Voyager. By tilting, the train can round curves designed for slower trains at higher speeds without causing undue discomfort to passengers.
Covering a large swath of Britain, Virgin runs trains at least every hour from London to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. The Virgin-run West Coast Main Line—which carries over 20 million travelers annually—connects England, Wales, Scotland and, via the Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire sea crossing, Ireland. Virgin has set a goal of increasing West Coast Main Line train speeds to 135 miles per hour. The company is also aiming to cut the travel time from Glasgow to London to less than four hours.
First Class passengers are entitled to some incredible perks, like complimentary Wi-Fi. (For those in Standard, you can pay as you go with a 1-hour or 24-hour pass.) Also in First Class, access to Virgin’s exclusive lounges at the London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham New Street, Coventry and Wolverhampton stations. There are even showers at Euston if you need a freshen up.
On the train, “The Shop” is where you’ll find mouth-watering sandwiches, snacks and Fairtrade hot drinks – and all at prices not to be sniffed at. So forget about the last-minute food dash before you board.
Young travelers receive an age-appropriate “Cool Kidz” bag, which include books, games, activity sheets, crayons, Virgin’s own “Kidz” magazines, and a traveler’s log to record favorite memories of seeing the United Kingdom by rail.
Of course, you may be tempted to keep a journal, too. After you experience Virgin trains, you’ll have memories to cherish forever.
